US records first deaths linked to Cyclospora outbreak

The United States has recorded its first two deaths linked to the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak, a foodborne parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhoea. Health officials in Michigan said both victims had underlying health conditions and died from complications related to dehydration caused by the illness.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 7,000 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported across 45 states, while Michigan has recorded more than 11,000 cases and 193 hospitalisations. Although the outbreak has been widespread, the CDC maintains that cyclospora infection is generally not life-threatening.

Health officials say the outbreak has been linked to lettuce imported from Mexico by Taylor Farms, prompting product recalls and its removal from Taco Bell restaurants. The CDC has advised the public to wash fresh produce thoroughly and cook food to at least 70°C (158°F) where possible to reduce the risk of infection.
