ISN and ABUAD call for greater investment in African neuroscience research

The International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN), Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) Advanced School has called for increased investment in neuroscience and cerebrovascular research across Africa. The call was made at the end of the week-long 2026 Advanced School on Stroke Neurochemistry and Cerebrovascular Resilience, held at ABUAD.

In a communique issued by the Director of the programme, Dr. Edem Edem, the school highlighted the need for stronger research infrastructure, increased use of African-specific data, and greater collaboration among researchers and institutions. Participants also emphasised the importance of multidisciplinary research to better understand and address stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases affecting African populations.

The school further advocated expanded training, mentorship, and research opportunities for postgraduate students and early-career scientists. It stressed that stronger links between laboratory research and clinical practice, alongside international collaboration, would help improve stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery across the continent.
