Kano Assembly passes bill to regulate private school fees
A bill passed by the Kano House of Assembly would require private and voluntary schools to seek approval before raising fees.

The Kano House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026 during Monday's plenary with recommendations aimed at strengthening the regulation and management of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The amended bill provides for the creation of the office of Executive Secretary to ensure more effective management of the board and also introduces a provision requiring private and voluntary schools and institutions to obtain approval before increasing tuition or other fees.
The legislation is designed to protect parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes by private educational institutions, ensuring that any proposed increase is subject to regulatory oversight. The amendment followed extensive consultations with stakeholders during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before its final consideration and passage by the Assembly.
