The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts across Nigeria to dismiss any student found guilty of kidnapping or related crimes after due investigation. The directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with the management of the Federal University of Lafia in Abuja.
Alausa said that although tertiary institutions remain largely safe, recent incidents involving students highlight the need for stronger intelligence gathering and closer collaboration with security agencies. He disclosed that he had met with the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative and reiterated President Bola Tinubu's directive that government institutions must not negotiate with or pay ransom to kidnappers.
The minister also announced that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will fund security enhancement projects, including perimeter fencing, under its 2027 intervention programme. He added that the Federal Government remains committed to expanding the Energising Education Programme to improve electricity supply in tertiary institutions through enhanced solar infrastructure.
