Experts call for urgent expansion of health insurance in Nigeria
Stakeholders at a Lagos public lecture say wider health insurance coverage is needed to protect households from medical costs.

Stakeholders at the 2026 BOF-PSN Public Lecture in Lagos have called for urgent expansion of health insurance coverage in Nigeria.
With the theme “Insurance-based Healthcare Financing: Key to Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria,” the event held at Marriott Hotel, Ikeja.
BOF-PSN Board Chairman, Pharm. Uchenna Uzoma Apakama, said low insurance coverage leaves millions vulnerable to financial hardship and poverty when illness strikes. He urged National Assembly members to use part of their constituency funds to pay premiums for vulnerable Nigerians.
Despite 20+ years of health insurance, Nigeria’s Universal Health Coverage is only 40%, with 70% of medical costs paid out-of-pocket.
Stakeholders blamed poor implementation and underfunding of the 2022 NHIA Act for failing informal and rural communities. They warned that without political will and investment, millions remain “one medical bill away from poverty.”
