Colonel accused of coup plot says Nigeria was near collapse

Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration, has said his actions were driven by patriotism and concern over Nigeria's worsening condition. He cited economic hardship, poor governance, and declining welfare among Nigerians and military personnel as factors that influenced his actions.

Ma’aji particularly raised concerns about the welfare of soldiers, including wounded personnel receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna. He claimed the alleged plan involved mobilising officers who shared his concerns but maintained that no operation had been carried out before his arrest. He also denied foreign involvement and said no date had been fixed for the proposed action.

The colonel called for improved remuneration, welfare and pension packages for soldiers, as well as a formal channel for military personnel to raise concerns without fear of victimisation. He also criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that it should have been gradual, and appealed to authorities for leniency, saying his experience following the arrest had made him reconsider his approach.
