Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has been elected the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). She becomes only the second woman to lead the association in its 66-year history, and the first in over three decades since Priscilla Kuye in 1991.
The election faced early disruption after a coordinated cyberattack targeted the NBA’s electronic voting platform, delaying voting which was scheduled to begin at midnight on Saturday. The Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), working with its cybersecurity team and Election Voting Service Provider (EVSP), activated emergency protocols. They confirmed no votes were cast during the disruption before resuming the process.
After voting and collation, Badejo-Okusanya secured 12,317 votes representing 47.18% of 26,106 valid ballots cast. She defeated Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, with 7,934 votes (30.39%) and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, with 5,855 votes (22.43%).
Despite the technical setback and weeks of debate, the successful election is being hailed as a major milestone for the legal profession. Attention now shifts to her leadership and priorities for the NBA.
